Payroll Tips
Child Support:
Incorrect amount was submitted: Contact State Disbursement Unit (SDU) or other payee and ask about the requirements and time fame for a refund.
Be carful, this process often varies from state to state.
Employee tells me I'm withholding an incorrect amount: It is the employee's responsibility and not yours to contact the agency/court to dispute the withholding, By law, you're bound to honor the terms of the income withholding order.
I'm not sure when to stop withholding for an employee: Check the order/notice carefully for a stop date. If you don't see one, continue withholding until you receive official notification from the agency or court to change or stop withholding.
Don't stop just because the employees says so. When in doubt, contact the issuing agency.
One state or agency/court has sent me withholding orders for more than one employee: You may sent a single check for each pay period to cover all the child support withholdings - if they're all send to the same receiving SDU or agency/court.
You must include identifying info about each individual's payment (e.g. amount withheld for each employee, date each amount was withheld, case number or other identifyer).
